The advances in technology coupled with the demand for improved functionality of the ENT Microscopes have led to the development of modern microscopes with advanced features offering greater functionality. Features such as recording capabilities, positioning, viewing, and many more have become important to improve the functionality of the ENT microscopes over a period.

Modern ENT surgical microscopes come with a variety of fixtures such as a stand to place or fix them on. Some are tabletop microscopes, and some are fixed on the wall or hung on ceilings of the hospital to save space.

Some of the features of a modern ENT microscope offering higher functionality are:

  • Binocular Head: The primary usage of an ENT microscope is to help view the affected area of a patient with clarity, and so a microscope has a Binocular that comes with an adjustable eye- lens to facilitate the view. You may also an additional head for the doctor’ assistant, it is also called teaching head and facilitates two people to work at the same time. These heads can work independently as well; they have varying magnifying levels as well as revolving levels.
  • Foot Controls: Controlling the microscope with the foot helps doctors to use hands for examination, recording such other purposes, it frees the hands of doctors, so they can simultaneously complete their work such as examination, documentation, etc. A foot pedal control provided helps manage features such as tilt, zoom, and focus.
  • Illumination: Fiber optic, Halogen, and incandescent are the basic types of illuminations for these microscopes, and the correct diagnosis, successful surgeries depend on the right amount of illumination levels. It is extremely important that illumination works fine and has perfect controls for successful operation, functionality. Using LEDs that offer powerful yet cooling lighting functionality is a better option.
  • Magnification: Microscopes need proper magnification facility based on the type of work, example, microscopes used in laboratory need high levels of magnification than the ones used in operation theaters.
  • Documentation: To meet the documentation needs of doctors, surgeons, etc. features such as Video camera; Digital SLRs are of great help.

Other factors such as wiring or internal cables are important, as improper or loosing wiring may obstruct doctors from performing their duties. Portability is another important factor, moving them from one portion of the hospital to another may be a requirement, hence these microscope need to be portable. Design is another important factor to consider before investing in an ENT microscope, for stress- free handling and ease of operation a microscope that has an agronomical design will be easy and convenient for doctors to use for long hours. In addition, as investment in these equipment is huge, for cost-effectiveness, it is better that you chose equipment that will be of use to many specialties, etc.
